Computer technology has today enriched nearly all domains of our lives, including that of education and language learning/training. With new advances in computer, artificial intelligence and multimedia technologies, it is possible to design language learning packages which use dynamic and interactive tutoring system with audio, visual and video support. The present LILA (Learning Indian Languages through Artificial intelligence) Hindi Prabodh, Praveen and Pragya packages offer a user-friendly and effective tool on the World Wide Web to learn Hindi through the medium of Assamese, Bodo, Bangla, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepalese, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

These packages can be used equally well by individuals and groups of learners. They are, however, not a substitute for the teacher. The teacher can also use these packages, to make the lessons more interesting, cut down the routine and provide him/her the opportunity of addressing the more substantial problems of the learner.

The courses are based on the Hindi Prabodh, Hindi Praveen and Hindi Pragya syllabi, already in use for classroom teaching and distant education, by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

LILA Hindi Prabodh

LILA Hindi Prabodh aims to impart a basic knowledge of Hindi and is the first-level course towards equipping one to carry out his/her day-to-day work in the Official Language. The package consists of Alphabet, Vocabulary, Lessons (51 units) and Dictionary Modules.

1. Alphabet Module

• In Consonants and Vowels section, you learn how to pronounce each alphabet. Click over the individual alphabet to listen to its pronunciation.
  
  
• The Vowel Signs, Conjunct Consonants and Nasalization sections provide you relevant information, basic rules and examples of each.
  
  
• The Word Formation section teaches related words and their meanings with the help of images. A speech facility has been provided to learn the pronunciation and intonation of words.
  
  
• Alphabet Writing in the Devanagari script is taught in an easy and interactive manner. A Trace sketches each selected alphabet on the screen, showing the sequence of the writing strokes. A few sample words are also available with the trace facility.

• The Vocabulary module familiarizes you with classified vocabulary through pictures, word games and exercises. When you select the Vocabulary module, you get the following Options:

  1. General Vocabulary (Pictorial)
  2. Names of Offices
  3. Designations
  4. Names of Ministries

• Click over the General Vocabulary button and you get a number of categories represented by pictures. Place the Mouse over any of these categories without clicking and a menu with the following options appears:

  1. Word Meaning
  2. Exercise 1
  3. Exercise 2
  4. Exercise 3
  5. Exercise 4
  6. Jumbled Characters

• On clicking the Lessons Tab, you will be presented with an image consisting of Lesson Numbers. There are, in all, 26 Lessons in LILA Hindi Prabodh. Move your Mouse over the desired Lesson Number and click to enter that lesson.
  
  
• Each lesson is further divided into the following sections:

  1. Objective Section
  2. Structure Exposure Section
  3. Narrative Section
  4. New Words Section
  5. Word Family Section
  6. Grammar Section
  7. Practice Section
  8. Exercise Section and
  9. Test Section

• In the Narrative section of each lesson, features like playing video at Paragraph Level, playing video at Sentence Level, playing Audio at Paragraph Level, playing Audio at Sentence Level, playing Audio at Word Level, Translation of the Paragraph, Full Narrative Text Translation, Record and Compare Facility at both the Word and Sentence levels, etc., are available. You can navigate from one section to the other by clicking over the Next Section and the Previous Section buttons provided at the Top Right Hand corner of the screen.
  

NOTE You can also use the ?NAVIGATION menu? or the Shortcut menu provided on the RIGHT CLICK of the Mouse to move to any part of the package. For more details, press ?F1? ? the Help window will be displayed. Select your category in which you require help.

4. Dictionary Module

• You can call the Dictionary directly by clicking over the Dictionary Tab. You can also invoke the Dictionary from the ?NAVIGATION? menu or the ?Shortcut? menu. A screen with an alphabet chart will appear.
  
  
• Click over the alphabet corresponding to the first letter of the desired word. You will be taken to another page where a small box to the left would appear, displaying a scroll list of words.
  
  
• Click over the desired word and to the right will appear the following information: Hindi word, its meaning and the grammatical category (e.g., noun, verb, gender, general information, etc., as applicable).
  
  
• Cultural notes are also provided, wherever relevant.

LILA Hindi Praveen

LILA Hindi Praveen is the full-length second-level Hindi course, specially designed for government and corporate employees. It is also useful for learning advanced Hindi after completing the LILA Hindi Prabodh course. The objective is to help you acquire a level of knowledge of Hindi enough to communicate in day-to-day situations and to equip you with a sound base of written Hindi and its core functional grammar.

Praveen package consists of Lessons (27 Lessons and 04 Review Lessons) and Dictionary Modules.

1. Lessons Module

• The Lessons Module of Praveen includes all the 9 sections of Prabodh Lessons.
• All other features like playing video at Paragraph Level, playing video at Sentence Level, playing Audio at Paragraph Level, playing Audio at Sentence Level, playing Audio at Word Level, Translation of the Paragraph, Full Narrative Text Translation, Record and Compare Facility at both the Word and Sentence levels, etc., are also available.

• You can call the Dictionary directly by clicking over the Dictionary Tab. You can also invoke the Dictionary from the ?NAVIGATION? menu or the ?Shortcut? menu. A screen with an alphabet chart will appear.

LILA Hindi Pragya

LILA Hindi Pragya course is specially designed to help the learner develop competence in drafting, in Hindi, various forms of official correspondence and texts, like notes, orders, memoranda, applications, circulars, notifications, reports, minutes, proceedings, requisitions, reminders, press releases, communiqué, etc., relevant to the Union Government. It also sharpens the learner?s skills in using appropriate technical terms and expressions in Hindi. The texts and narratives used in the course material have been specially designed to provide, directly or indirectly, relevant information about the structures of offices, various office practices and procedures, the Government file system, work models, distribution of work amongst Departments and Sections and the different types of correspondence, forms and templates used in these offices.

The package is largely addressed to the employees of Union Government and semi-Government offices, public sector undertakings, corporations and financial institutions who are required to attain functional competence in Hindi, to be able to perform their office work in the Official Language.

The prerequisite for using the Pragya package is that the user should have either completed the Hindi Praveen course or have a working knowledge of spoken and written Hindi of almost equivalent level. The package can also be used by persons whose mother tongue is Hindi but who do not find themselves fully equipped to perform office work in Hindi for want of appropriate knowledge of the official forms, expressions, technical terminology, etc.

Pragya Course Structure
The course material consists of 33 lessons and has been graded into four parts:
          1. Language-based Review Lessons (1?6)
          2. Drafting of Correspondence (7?17)
          3. Noting in Hindi (18?33) and
          4. Unit Exams (1?4)

• In the Appendix Module, samples of Official Forms and Templates, accompanied by a Glossary of English-Hindi Technical Terms and Expressions, are presented.
